The iAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider Course includes:
All the theory and literature required for preparation and reference during the Advanced Rider course.
- The coaching you need to become an Advanced Rider:
- An initial assessment with one of our experienced National Observers who will review your riding and help you decide if the course will be of benefit to you.
- One to one coaching sessions with an allocated Observer who will mentor you through all aspects of advanced riding to iAM RoadSmart standards. Each session takes around 4 hours, typically 50% on the bike, 50% discussion. You can have as many sessions as you need to get to the required standard but typically most have 5 to 7 sessions.
- A final assessment with an independent National Observer who will ensure you are fully prepared.
- Your Test Fee is included
- A year’s membership of iAM RoadSmart
- A year’s membership of Nottingham Advanced Motorcyclists which includes entitlement to join ride outs, Group Nights and other group activities
- Qualified Observers giving you their own time, one to one
- The iAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider Course costs £149.
- An additional fee of £15 per session applies to go towards your volunteer Observer’s expenses
Think how much this would all cost if you went to a commercial training organisation.

I passed my bike test in January 2015, but as I was told when I passed my car test (some years earlier), passing the test is when you start learning on the road, not when you stop. This is particularly true on a motorbike where you are not cocooned by roll-bars and airbags and the thing likely to make the biggest difference to your safety is your own skills on the road.
With this in mind, I decided I would also set a challenge for myself to pass the IAM Advanced Test, which I did in September 2015. Now, in March 2018, I have ridden almost 40,000 miles since passing my test, at all times of day and night and in all kinds of weather conditions.
Nottingham Advanced Motorcyclists enabled me to join (and learn from) a group of extremely supportive bikers who are significantly more experienced than me. The regular ride-outs are fun, well-organised and lacking in typical machismo behaviour. I would encourage other riders to complete the advanced test whether you’ve been riding for years, or whether you are new to it. There is always something more to learn and what price can you put on investing in the most significant safety feature on your bike – yourself.
